On the afternoon of November 9, State Councilor and Defense Minister Wei Fenghe held talks with US Defense Secretary Matisse in Washington.

Wei Fenghe said that a series of important consensus reached between President Xi Jinping and President Trump is a strategic lead in the development of Sino-US relations. The two sides should conscientiously implement the consensus of the two heads of state and work hard to achieve non-conflict, non-confrontation, mutual respect, cooperation and mutual benefit, and jointly make positive contributions to world peace and prosperity. The two sides should actively and steadily handle the relations between the two militaries, strengthen strategic communication, increase strategic mutual trust, expand exchanges and cooperation, properly manage risks, study and discuss rules and regulations to prevent accidental friction conflicts, and strive to make the relations between the two militaries a stabilizer for bilateral relations.

Matisse agreed with Wei Fenghe’s claim on the stable development of relations between the two countries and the two militaries. He said that the United States has no intention of containing China. The development of constructive relations between the two militaries has always been the goal of the United States. It is hoped that the two militaries will make full use of the existing dialogue mechanism to communicate and coordinate, strengthen crisis management and control, avoid misunderstanding and misjudgment, and promote pragmatic cooperation in more fields. .

The two sides also exchanged views on the South China Sea issue, the Taiwan issue, and the peninsula issue. Wei Fenghe pointed out that the Chinese military resolutely opposes any act of splitting the country and will safeguard national sovereignty, security and territorial integrity at all costs.
